Who is the best anti virus for windows xp.I have the internet 7.I have Avira right now, which thinks everything? -

is a virus. What one doesnt slow down my pc too?

Did you also find Avira difficult or slow to update? Avast is one of best anti-virus programs and completely free Avast works for 60 days after installation you will obtain your FREE license key by email after you register, the license key is valid for 1 year after one year you will need to just re-register. Avast home edition is free and effective, it scans your downloads and emails for viruses (unlike AVG) and also includes anti-rootkit and anti-spyware, it can also run a boot scan, I use Avast along side Comodo Pro firewall both are free and have been independently tested and proven to be more effective then Norton or Mcafee. Avast Anti-Virus: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.ht... Comodo Pro: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/ Why Avast is better then AVG: AVG themselves state that the free version of their Anti-Virus does NOT scan downloads for malicious content where as the free version of Avast DOES, whats the point in having anti-virus software that can t prevent viruses from being downloaded to your computer, I ve also tested both using the EICAR test viruses, AVG allowed all the viruses onto the computer Avast blocked them instantly Avast offers far superior protection. test your anti-virus: http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_fil...

Hey! Hope I can Help. I have used all the available free antivirus software available..although I do not recommend plain antivirus because it does not usually protect you against spyware nor has a good firewall I do realyze it is nesessary for some people. Not to knock on avg or avast but ive had terrible luck with the latest versions of them. I highly recommend you give PC TOOLS a try. Its actually what I use on my laptop. It works fine and doesnt slow me down. Get your FREE download here. ☆ Download = http://www.pctools.com/ NOW.. if you do not have one already you should get a firewall and antispyware program to go along with your antivirus. Both can be obtained for free. ANTISPYWARE = the best program for this is MALWAREBYTES. FREE. ☆ DOWNLOAD = http://malwarebytes.org/ FIREWALL = The best ive used is WEBROOT FIREWALL. FREE. ☆ Download =http://www.webroot.com/En_US/consumer-p... GO HERE to learn about my most recommended security protection and get it free for 90 days! http://onecare.live.com/standard/en-us/d... ***** Ps.. Pc security is very important..Id never recommend a program to anyone unless I truly belive its the best option. ☆Good Luck. I hope my answer was helpful. If I can do anything else please let me know. You can email me via my profile page. Peace out - Eric

How i can install internet explorer 7 and windows media 11 in fake windows xp? -

how i can install internet explorer 7 and windows media 11 in fake windows xp?

A windows cannot be fake but illegal/pirated..U can try other sites for WGA bypass cracks..but this is not tha place for such stuff....U cannot first download these from Ms site in the first case and if u have copied it from somewhere, u wil fail the validation test...so if u want, get a legal version or go pirated and wait to get caught.....

you can t legally. you got to have cracks of the program which you can get from sites that lets you download the crack plus viruses for free. just use firefox and winamp. they re legal and won t give you headaches.

Your windows XP is not fake it is illegal, and to answer your question you cannot. Unless you can verify the version of XP is Legit the software will not work.

Actually, it can be done, but you ll have to do a few things. Here s your solution: Go to Microsoft s website, download and install Microsoft Virtual PC 2007. When you ve done this, create a virtual disk of, say, 10GB. Install WindowsXP on the virtual disk, then IE7, then WMP11. At that point you ll have a totally different computer running inside your system that s fully operational (as if you had two computers), but completely transparent to your system, and virtually invisible.

I have a registry patch if u want it so then u can download the software from some other sites not Microsoft cause u wont pass validation but after downloading lets say internet explorer from yahoo and windows media player 11 I think u can get from Microsoft without passing validation. You apply the registry patch and launch the installer and while installation it will pass validation. It works but don t think ur system is valid though. Contact me for the registry patch. Don t worry it won t harm ur pc.

You buy a real copy of Windows XP.

Windows 7 - Using Hard Drive from XP? -

I just got windows 7 and love it. I used it as a replacement when my XP died from corrupted files (Some system files). I put it on my secondary hard drive, which I purchased yesterday, a normal Seagate 80GB SATA drive. Windows 7 is running, but I m having issues getting my files from my old hard drive. I can see it in device manager, but it s not allowing me to mount it at all. Does anyone have any ideas? Useful Specs: 2 SATA HDDs (Broken XP, Windows 7) 1 ATA HDD (Linux, Ubuntu) 1 External HDD (Maxor, Just Files)

Define quot;not lettingquot; - is it giving you an error message? (You don t mount drives in Windows. If they re recognized as Windows partitions they re mounted.)

Why wont yahoo beta mail let me in despite my downloading the Windows XP Explorer 7 update as directed? -

I have used Yahoo Beta mail for some time (it really is better!) but today it would not let me in, saying the browser was incompatible and referring me to free downloads. I spent ages downloading Windows XP update 7 Explorer but I still can t get into Yahoo Beta Mail. Can anyone help? Also it is frustrating that Yahoo do not appear to have a help phoneline in UK. Does anyone have it?

I sure do have the number! 0207 1311000 To get a Customer Services operator, say your phone doesn t allow calls to 084, 087 or 09 numbers. They should be able to help you over the phone. Good luck .

What is windows 7, how does it work? -

Is it an really big update on vista, or is it a whole new thing that will have its own name. Also i just got my laptop for Christmas and it came with vista do you think that I would be able to run windows 7 flawlessly?

Windows 7 is an entirely new operating system, just like Vista was new from XP. Its in beta right now, so unless you re keen on messing around with untested betas and possibly having data loss or other problems, I wouldn t try it. That being said, it should work fine if you have Vista SP1 and you shouldn t even have to reinstall any programs or anything. You have to seek it out yourself, it isn t an update really.

Windows 7 is the next OS from Microsoft.I use it for a month now and it performs faster than Vista and requires lower requirements. It has a lot of improvements but the core is Vista. Windows 7 are simply beautiful.

How do an invitation code for beta testing Windows 7? -

I tested Vista and I m dying to test Windows 7, but I can t figure out how. Can someone help?

From my understanding, developers and programmers of software companies and people from expo s got to take it for a test spin, but to the general public, there is no official beta yet. You can, however, try to get a torrent for the beta. There are several websites (mininova.org, isohunt.com, torrentreactor.net) that have quot;crackedquot; beta s available. If you want, you can try one out. I ve been thinking about trying it but I don t know how reliable the torrent beta s are. I hope this helps.

Not really interested in 7, it looks more like a mac desktop style...big deal

How can i install yahoo messenger on windows 7? -

anyone tried the beta of windows? windows 7? how can i install yahoo messenger on win 7?

It s getting stuck at 99% of installation...Is it the same for you? I guess its not supporting windows 7..Is there any alternative to download yahoo messenger now?

You would install it normally... I just downloaded and stood up my copy of Windows 7 and found after a couple of tries, with different versions, that Yahoo Messenger version 7 (how ironic) works just fine so it seems. Other then the default skin, Windows 7 makes it look pretty nice.

Here is the link to download YIM: http://messenger.yahoo.com/download/ This is the link to older versions of YIM if IM does not work for you. I have Vista and IM9 does not work well with it. http://www.oldverision.com/program.php?n... Hope this helps!!!

still downloading Win.7.

Is windows 7 an upgrade from Vista, XP, or all new? -

I heard it was XP with a facelift, which would make sence, due to vista has so many problems and XP doesn t.

well it is a new operating system it basically has the speed and stability of XP with the look of vista

It s Microsoft s attempt to keep all the manufacturers from shipping Linux on their netbooks. It s not really an upgrade, but it s not all new either.

UXtheme patch windows 7? -

Is there a UXtheme patch for windows 7 build 7000 and if so how do you do it? im using win7 on a separate partition so im really not worried if i have to reinstall it.

You can try here: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-E... I personally don t see any point in changing the theme because there are a lot of theme packs that you can find all over the internet, such as here: http://www.ithinkdiff.com/windows-7-them... I never tried the patch, nor do i intend on doing it, use at your own risk!

Has the Windows 7 Beta been released? -

The windows 7 beta was supposed to be released today but i can t seem to find it. im just wondering if i missed out because there were only 2.5 million spots available. I checked the Windows 7 website and it looks like the beta hasn t been released yet, but im not sure. i checked at 12am(pacific time) and again at 12pm (pacific time) when it was supposed to come out, but there is nothing about downloading the beta except for: quot; Want to try the Beta? Come back the afternoon of January 9.quot;

Not officially as yet, but it has been available from unofficial sources for around the last ten days. Unfortunately I cannot divulge the links as I would be breaking community guidelines. Suffice to say it has the speed and stability of XP, and the looks and security of Vista. In short its everything Vista should have been from the outset and can t wait for the final release. LUg.

Umm, yes it is, Windows 7 Beta 1 build 7000 x86/x64 both versions :) torrent link: http://www.mininova.org/search/windows+7... two first are the ones, choose 64 bit or 32 bit one

It is available for Microsoft partners now.

Not yet.

No, but a better alternative would be linux.

I hate Windows Vista, will Windows 7 be compatible with it? -

Hardly anyone has Windows Vista, so none of my word documents or powerpoints are compatible with theirs! I had to get a new computer this year, and I didn t realize that Vista was completely incompatible with everything! Will the new Windows 7 be compatible with my Vista? How would I switch my computer over to Windows 7?

Windows 7 is an operating system, just as Vista is, so compatibility with each other is not an issue. But, as W7 is intended as an incremental upgrade to Vista, it will be compatible with all programs and applications that are Vista compatible. Word documents and powerpoint presentations, if they are Microsoft, should be compatible with other versions of the Microsoft programs, regardless of versions, So either you or your friends are using other branded programs, or corrupted programs

for 1 thing vista sold much more than any OS since windows 98, #2 windows7 is an upgrade for vista, better security, more options, better compatibility, more stable, more features, faster processing, and many more that they are not talking about yet. And FYI the only thing that i had problems that i had with compatability was with a old printer, all my doc s, powerpoint, excel every thing worked right out of the box. windows 7should be launching in late 2009

Do you realize that your Word document and powerpoint compatibility has absolutely NOTHING to do with Vista? It s true. You probably just have the new version of Office (2007) while everyone else has an old version. In Office, you can save your files as a 2003 version and it ll be compatible with the old versions. And Vista is not imcompatible with everything. In fact, almost everything works with it, even things that were never intended to work with Vista.

Can you use VMware fusion on a windows pc to run multiple OSs (say vista and windows 7 beta?)? -

if not how can i run windows 7 beta w/o completely reformating the pc. can i run it from an external hard drive? how?

Yes i believe you Can Have A try find out

I want to get rid of windows 7 but i havnt got a partition of xp and i cant install xp because w7 no allow ? -

i want to get rid of windows 7 but i havn t got a partition of xp and i can t install xp because w7 no allow ?

First things first, backup any data or applications you want to save! You are going to have to delete everything and start over. You can t uninstall Windows 7. Your most likely going to have to delete the partition and re-add it during the initial phase of the Windows XP install. When the Windows XP install CD is booted, it goes to a blue screen with messages at the bottom of the screen as it loads different drivers. After this phase there is a step where you can select the partition you want to install Windows XP on. At this screen, you can also delete and add partitions. This is where you want to delete the large partition that Windows 7 is installed on. Once that is done, select the unpartitioned space and create the partition that Windows XP will be installed on. If you get that far, the install should proceed normally.

Will cisco clean access agent work with windows 7? -

I just installed the beta version of Windows 7, and am now trying to install Cisco Clean Access Agent to access my university s network. I keep getting a message saying quot;the client version is old and not compatible.quot; Any way to get around this?

Beta means unsupported. Drivers are only going to work if you are able to find them at Cisco s website. I doubt it very much.

The compatibility attempt did not work for me; build 7000. Please, if anyone can figure this out post something up or email me. Report Abuse

I have no problems with my copy of build 6933, have you downloaded a pre-beta? However I did have to hack the resources to make Cisco Clean Access Agent think I was running Vista, however there is a better way. 1. Uninstall Cisco Clean Access Agent. 2. Right click the installer and select Properties. 3. Select Vista RTM as the compatibility mode, under the Compatibility tab. 4. Run the installation as an administrator. 5. Run the application (as Vista RTM too). It s easy! P.S. Windows 7 is not legally beta, it s pre-beta!

Sorry man, Windows 7 is still beta. A lot of things are not going to work with it, even when it is released next year. Looks like Clean Access Agent will have to wait its turn.

How do you restore Windows 7? -

Hey guys I was just wondering how to restore Windows 7 Beta to when I just installed it. Thank you

If you ve just installed the Beta, then you would have made a DVD to install the files to your computer. If you want to reinstall it, you have two options - run the setup file from the DVD within windows (any version) or boot using the DVD in your CD/DVD drive. You may need to change your boot settings for this to work, or press a key (such as F12) during the boot process, depending on your computer. This will launch the installer and you can opt to repair, reinstall or upgrade your existing Windows installation. If you don t know how to do this, it would suggest that you may be new to beta testing - Windows 7 is a beta, not a final release version. It will cease working in August, so I hope you have backed up all your documents, photos, music and other important files and know how to reinstall your previous operating system (XP, Vista, whatever).

You mean uninstall an upgrade to Windows 7? you can t go back if you upgraded Vista or XP. You need to backup your files and do a clean install of your old operating system. You have to do this because after August 31, 2009, the Windows 7 Beta will stop working and you ll be unable to use your computer since the operating system doesn t work. Once they release the retail version of Windows 7 you could buy it and upgrade your Beta to that. But that s at least 5 months where you couldn t use your computer

When i try to install windows 7 it comes up a error saying? -

windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase of installation to install windows restart installation and i resarted the instalation and i got the same error if you can please let me know what the problem is and how to fix it thank you

Haven t seen that one. Are you reformatting when you install? That might help.

I need help, if I install Windows 7 beta on my laptop, will I lose Vista and ALL my programs and games? -

I m talking about everything I have on my laptop like office, the Sims 2 and everything. Thank you!!!

why wouldn t you WANT to get rid of Vista? It sucks. Thank you P.C. for coming up with what Mac had in 2001.

As far as i have heared you will lose everything i am not 100% sure, but i do not see why it wouldn t just configure it to the new OS you know?

If you install it over your existing Windows then yes, you should get a boot loader and partition your disk in two, you will then be able choose which to boot at start up

Yes, unless you make another partition, or have a second hard drive.

Yes, unless you partition your hard drive or put a second one in.

yes.

What is the Windows 7 system Requirements? -

Reportedly it will be a min of 1gig ram, preferably 2gig 2ghz processor 1gigof free disk space

I am currently running Windows 7 (Build 6801) on 1gb RAM and 2.4ghz CPU with all the new eye candy and its lightning fast, far more responsive than Vista http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7 LUg. Will it be worth it to upgrade to windows 7 if im using vista? -

So i love vista and i haven t had any of the problems people complain about, but not i hear a new operating system is coming out. To me windows 7 looks alot like vista and im not sure if its worth it to upgrade. What do you think?

To me it will be worth it. It will be faster, lighter, more intuitive and probably a little cheaper. In addition, you have the benefit of knowing that Microsoft actively tried to avoid all the Vista mistakes. Onuora http://www.windows7update.com/Windows7fe...

Windows 7 is definitely better that Windows vista..I m not the only one saying that.Even microsoft is telling now that the 7 is better than Vista. Actually microsoft had lot of problems with Vista. They told they won t release Windows 7 until 2011 when they release Vista. But Now they are releasing 7 So earlier. That means Vista didn t use by many users as they expected... It will be better to install windows 7 than installing vista. It has many new features..And it is not giving many warning massages.

I personally say no. I have 10 computers running vista and the only problems i have had from them were the drivers needing to be updated (Only on the ones i upgraded from xp). Windows 7 is basically going to be the exact same as vista but with a few minor changes. If 7 is offered as a free upgrade, i may get it. But if you have to pay, I saw it is not worth the money to upgrade.

Well, im running windows vista and it looks great but its starting to give problems since i upgraded my pc and i hear that windows 7 will be faster and better then vista and will have a lot more features, im going to upgrade to window 7 when it comes out but its your choice.

Will my files from vista be deleted if i install windows 7 beta? -

If I install the beta Will my files from vista be deleted if i install windows 7 beta? After the trial period of the beta is up will i have to buy the Windows 7 operating system or can i get a serial number for free?

If you want to test out Windows 7 and are currently running Vista, your options are to either 1. Do an upgrade installation. If you do this BACK UP YOUR COMPUTER. Once the Beta expires on August 1, you will need to reinstall Vista and your old files. OR 2. Perform a clean installation. This is the recommended method. To do this you will need to partition your hard drive and install Windows 7 on its own partition. Once the Beta expires, you will not be given a key to acquire the final version. You will have to purchase a key once the final version of Windows 7 is released. For more information check out http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows... and http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows... Best, Jeff Windows Outreach Team

Your files will be fine. Make sure you use the Seven upgrade instead of performing a clean install. In August, or whatever the expiration date is for the Seven beta, you will have to pay for the standard release of the OS.

Yes, unless you do like i did and partion off some of your c: drive and do a dual boot.

you will have to reinstall vista if you want to install windows 7you should dual boot windows 7 beta ends 8-1 2009 and windows 7 will be out late 2009 http://lifehacker.com/5126781/how-to-dua... http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows...

Anyone get Microsoft office working with Windows 7? -

I have been trying out Windows 7 and have Microsoft office installed on a different partition. When i try to start it up it says quot;the operating system is not currently configured to run this application.quot; Also when i put in the CD and try to install it, it just sits there and does nothing. Is there any hope? Anyone get it working? If so, how? Thanks.

Works fine for me. Try to run it in compatibility mode. Right click it, choose properties, and then i think there s a tab for compatibility

Go to the CD drive after putting it in and execute the setup program.

Nvidia drivers for Windows 7 x64 beta? -

I am building a new system, and wanted to try out the windows 7 beta on it. Has anyone had any luck running games on the beta with an nvidia card? My new build runs on an GTX295 and an i7 920.

This should help. It tells your what to do somewhere down the page. http://www.nvidia.com/object/windows_7.h... If that s unsuccessful, then just install the drivers that came for your card. Since it s a GTX 295 (haha nice), I m guessing it s pretty new so you could just reinstall the drivers on Windows 7. Have a great day!

its a freakin beta, i mean in a couple months it wont even work i hate to see people trying to put a lot of work trying to get things to run properly on this it will not be free forever, just make sure it works for you then back up to vista in all seriousness but for your question, everything that runs on vista will run on 7, so install the drivers that came with the card

I haven t tried any games on it, tho when i did install it (7), it downloaded the nvidia driver and other drivers in an update for me. Not all the drivers were installed. But atleast I didnt have to look for them

i got it to install all my drivers for my computer. Asus ones and my video card i have the sapphire 3870. but mine is the x32

My guess would be the nvidia site, you could check out farm and fleet tho

Windows 7 n00b questions? -

Okay, I own a Samsung laptop windows XP with Nvidia Go 7600 and intel centrino duo. Will my laptop be able to run the windows 7 beta? If I can run it, is there a way to get my XP back? Will I lose all of my data by trying out the beta? Is there some sort of bootcamp-ish sort of thing where I can have 2 OSs at the same time?

install virtualbox (www.virtualbox.org) and it will allow you to simultaneously boot both OS s at once and you can try 7 while youre sitting in xp.

You didn t say exactly what hardware is in the laptop, so only you will be able to figure out if you can run it. See the minimum requirements for Windows 7 beta to find out: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows... If you install Windows 7 beta over your partition that has XP on it, then no, you will not get XP back in the current state it is in unless you create a backup image. You can optionally create a second partition by shrinking the current one and then creating a new one from the free space and then installing Windows 7 beta on that second partition and then XP will be untouched. If you are interested in this (dual-booting), then you can find steps to do this here: http://lifehacker.com/5126781/how-to-dua... If you want to run XP and be able to try out Windows 7 beta while you re still in XP, then yes, you can do that by using VirtualBox. Get it here: http://www.virtualbox.org/

I think with the windows 7 beta that it wipes your Hard Drive. I have yet to try it out when I get my DVD-R discs I will test it/

Windows 7 Beta Build 7000? -

I have Windows 7 Beta Build 7000, And it expires 7/1/09 and i want to know if anyone knows a registry trick or anything that will make Windows 7 Never Expire? Please Please Try And Help, Thank You!

You will just have to download beta version 2 when it comes out and that will solve your problem. The beta version 2 will come with fixes and patches to fix the all ready buggy beta version 1.

umm from what i ve found, the stuff here should make it never expire. http://pcsofts.cn/system/windows-7-activ...

Nope. Microsoft will disable it anyway. Do you really wanna use that buggy software that long anyway? EDIT: Thank god! When will beta2 hit us?!

Just downloaded windows 7 and my TP Link wireless G adapter will not be detected - drivers wont work? -

TP Link wireless G adapter drivers will not work. Tried XP and vista drivers. software downloaded but the adapter isnt recognized. i have no way to connect to internet on that computer. how can i get the drivers working?

There s probably a good chance you can t. Windows 7 is still in Beta, and there probably won t be drivers for it for while if there aren t any now that will work.

Hi David R, My name’s Ron. I’m a member of the Windows Outreach Team and I thought I’d drop in just to try and help you out here. First, it’s important to remember that Windows 7 is in fact in the Beta stages, which mean it’s being tested by users and hardware vendors alike. This will account for some hardware simply not having updated drivers to work with Windows 7 yet, but rest assured, I’m betting things will be squared away in due time. You’ve already done the smart thing and tried the older drivers, so we can skip that step. Do you have access to an Ethernet port? That would probably be the easiest fix for the short term if you intend to keep using Windows 7. Also, here’s a quick link to the TP-Link support center, they might be able to help out: http://www.tp-link.com/support/Support.a... If this becomes a productivity problem for you, be sure to follow the instructions under “Removing the Beta” on this page: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows... Be sure to have all your backup files. Hope this helps a bit. Cheers, Ron Windows Outreach Team

I just downloaded the Windows 7 Beta? -

How big of a CD/DVD memory disc do I need? When I downloaded the file, it said it was 2.44 GB. Do they sell CD s that large on the market?

Windows 7 is a BETA product and beta products should never be installed on your main computer unless you are capable of undoing the damage they can and probably will cause to your system. take this advice or ignore it . it s up to you. did you not bother to read the microsoft warnings. ?

ya u can burn with CD i have ones that are 3 GB they cost slightly more then other ones like 10-50 more centsgt;gt;FRIESgt;gt;circus citygt;gt;best buy.. are best i guess i duno about walmart but everything is cheap in walmart besides games LOL regular prices :D

No. A DVD disc will hold the download.

How do i remove windows 7 beta from my computer? -

so i ran into some problems after installing windows 7 beta last night, it didn t have the drives i needed so i couldn t use my ethernet port. How do i remove the beta? and go back to using xp like i was before. I tried to use the xp install disc but it wouldn t work because the beta is newer then xp. also now when i try to run the xp disc it says it cant be read. now when i turn my computer on it won t load windows at all... so what can i do? is there a way i can just delete everything on my hard drive and just try to install windows xp again?

put the xp installation disc start up ur computer and press F12 choose reboot DVD rom or CD rom i just finished those steps and got my XP back.

You don t install a beta operating system on a computer that you need to use. It s a beta - it s to find bugs for Microsoft, not to use. Format your drive, then - if you have a full install version of XP, you ll be able to install it. (If all you have is an upgrade or repair disk, you ll have to buy XP.)

You can reformat the hard drive and reload Windows XP with your copy of windows XP that should have came with your PC.

You will need an XP bootable disk and then format the hard drive and do the install. Also make sure you have all the related drivers for Xp as well.

Go to control panel...then find remove software. Once it generates a list (it may take a couple of minutes), find Windows 7, and click uninstall.

I would suggest downloading dban wipe your drive and try install XP good luck! http://www.dban.org/

How to install Windows 7 on a Mac? -

I ve downloaded Windows 7, and I m using a Mac. I have VMWare Fusion, and Parallel. I m tending to use either if it s okay. I was wondering if I need any other Windows softwarel XP, or Vista before I can successfully install Windows 7? Please help me. Thank you so much!

Errr, as Windows 7 is totally unsupported (even from Microsoft) as it s Beta, it s definitely not supported on Mac. I ve never tried it; though, in theory, all you need is Windows 7. Just realize that putting a Beta MS operating system on a Mac is asking for trouble with drivers. Also, its license will expire at the end of summer. Just use the boot camp assistant in your utilities folder. Install Windows 7 as you would any other OS.

1. Download and burn the ISO image into DVD. 2. Run Boot Camp Assistance (Applications -gt; Utilities). (a) Follow the wizard to create a partition for installation of windows. At the end of the wizard, you will be asked to insert the Windows DVD and restart your Mac. (b) If you have an existing copy of Windows installed via Boot Camp, you will either need to remove it and follow step 2(a), or choose “Start the Windows installer” and format the Windows partition later in the installation process. 3. Your Mac will restart and you will see “Press any key to boot from DVD…”. Press any key and the setup will load all the necessary files. You should see the Install Windows screen after the process. 4. Follow the Install Windows wizard. Choose “Custom (advanced)” and that will lead you to the partition screen. 5. In the partition table, there will be a list of partitions of your HDD. Select the “BOOT CAMP” partition, click on “Drive options (advanced)” and then “Format”. 6. Make sure that the Boot Camp partition is selected before clicking next. 7. The installation process will start. 8. You computer will restart several times during the installation. Remember not to hit any key when you are prompted to boot from the DVD. 9. After the installation is done, you will see the “Set up windows screen”. Again, follow the set up wizard till the end. 10. If everything is fine, you will be in the desktop screen now. 11. You will need to install the drivers now. Put in the Mac OS X Install Disc 1 and run the Boot Camp Utility setup. 12. Download the Boot Camp Update 2.1 for Windows Vista 64-bit here and install it. (You might want to set the compatibility under properties to Windows Vista and run as administrator.) 13. After all the installations, the custom F1 to F12 keys (eg. F10 to mute) and the eject key will work. 14. However, video and audio drivers need some update. For the video driver (nVidia 8600M), you can find it in the Mac OS X Install Disc 1 under Boot Camp -gt; Drivers -gt; NVidia -gt; NVidiaMobileSetup64.exe 15. As for the audio driver, you can download Vista_R209.zip here and run the setup.exe as admin and in Windows Vista compatibility mode. (credits to shannon here) 16. Run Windows Update and install all the updates. 17. You should have a fully working Windows 7 OS on your Mac!

Just use bootcamp. Here s a step by step: http://www.simplehelp.net/2009/01/15/usi...

If your Mac is running, Leopard BootCamp should be already installed out of the box. Just pop in the Win 7 CD and Mac should guide you through the rest of the setup. Hope that helps a little.

Parallel works right, you can try with the boot-camp application too. You don t need Windows vista, just the Windows 7 iso^^ Hope it helps you

nope, vmware should install it fine. its a standalone operating system, remember, you dont need anything else

I did it with VirtualBox. It seems to work pretty well. I just can t get the drivers for a couple things to work at this point. http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

lol i have a mac too : ) its great idk

i think they had an article that would help in http://www.askingthexpert.com/article_19... but the site s been down for a while now...

You can t install, windows if you have a mac! Been there, done that bought the T-shirt!

If you want to do a beta test on Windows 7..? -

If you want to do a beta test on Windows 7, will there be a download link on Microsoft s website or do they send it out to chosen members?

The planned release of Windows 7 is in about 3 years, but obviously that may very well change if the development process doesn t go as planned. You can check the topic at http://www.windowsvienna.com/forums/wind... where they are also looking to download Windows 7. Since it s not a public download, you ll most likely not find it anywhere on the web right now, but I d monitor those forums and see when a link pops up. It s bound to happen when Microsoft starts leaking releases.

You have to be a registered beta tester for them and an MSDN subscriber. Since we probably won t see a beta of Windows 7 for 5 years or more, you have plenty of time.

How to install windows 7? -

I cant install windows 7 on windows xp it says you cant install windows 7 on this caind of windows pleace HELP!!!

I think someone has sold you a bill of goods. Windows 7 isn t scheduled to be released until late 2009 or 2010. So where ever you got that from might have a virus on it, I would scan those files before trying to do anything with them if I were you. Rumors and innuendos mention different dates for the release of Windows 7: For example one date is the Holiday season of 2009: http://windows7news.com/ Then another rumored date is sometime in 2010: http://www.dabcc.com/article.aspx?id=522... With as much trouble as Microsoft has had in releasing Vista, I would rather guess the late 2010 date to be more accurate. Microsoft is showing portions of it off at trade shows, but it isn t ready for prime time yet. It currently is in the quot;Pre-Betaquot; stage. ------------------------------ well, ok if you managed to get some kind of copy of the prebeta version, what I would do if i were you is to try installing it onto a fresh clean hard drive not over another windows version. It s possible the version you have is a full install not an upgrade format. So try installing on a blank formatted hard drive.

I suspect you are trying to install Internet Explorer 7, not Windows 7 as there is no such program. I believe that you have to have the XP SP2 installed on your computer before you can upgrade to IE7. Go to http://microsoft.com and search for XP Service Pack 2. It is a free download. Once you have installed Service Pack 2, you should be able to install Internet Explorer 7.

Windows 7 isn t even released yet, how can you be trying to install it? Besides that, you need to provide more details, what your system configuration is and so on (how much RAM, type of processor/CPU and so on.)

More than likely you got that download off a bittorrent website... layoff those... wait till the REAL windows 7 comes out... I would not try to install windows 7 (thecopy you have)because it maybe a virus that will mess up your computer pretty bad.

Its of course better than Windows Vista !!! Go here for more Videos of Windows 7 http://tenuktutorials.blogspot.com/2008/...

Try vmware player at http://filehippo.com idk if it will work, if it don t just wait and for the release not beta.. have fun... hope it helps..

Dell Latitude C400 Windows 7 Beta? -

I own a Dell latitude c400 laptop and recently I install the Windows 7 Beta OS. Everything went great installing the beta OS and it runs great on my laptop, but the one problem is my resolution on my monitor is too big. I try everything doing a windows update, reinstalling my video controller driver, and changing my display options, (no luck) My video card is a Intel 830m or 855m graphics card. Does anyone have a solution on how to get my resolution fixed? Maybe a vista driver? P.S I know the Latitude C400 was not made to run Windows 7 or Vista according dell, but I do not see any issues running those Operating systems. Please and Thank you

You should not have installed Windows 7; it is a BETA. Format your PC then run it in a virtual machine such as VirtualBox

Windows 7 install question? -

i downloaded windows 7 Beta, when i tried to install it, is was an iso file, how do i install it?

Do not install on a PC you have to use every day. Microsoft said It can be glitchy—so don t use a PC you need every day. Microsoft also said Please don t... * Don’t install the Beta if you’re uncomfortable troubleshooting your own PC problems. Microsoft does not provide technical support for the Windows 7 Beta. * Don’t install the Beta on your primary home or work computer. Microsoft is not responsible for downtime stemming from the Windows 7 Beta. MFG Daniel

As everyone else said burn it to a dvd unless you have a virtual machine running then you can just mount the image and install

Burn to DVD, then install. Follow the directions on the site. Microsoft has laid it out pretty simple.

Burn it to DVD

Windows 7 Blank Taskbar and Wallpaper!? -

I m trying out the new Windows 7 beta. Anyway, It s been a day since I did a fresh install and I ve run into a semi-persistent problem: explorer.exe loads... but incorrectly. The taskbar is blank, except for the start icon and my other icons are there... but invisible. Also, my gadgets load fine, but the wallpaper is black. My only remedy is to go into task manager, close explorer.exe, and restart it. And as I said, this problem seems to be random, but happens more often than not. Any suggestions?

Mark, take a look at this Microsoft TechNet forum thread. It addresses the same problem you have run into. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Foru... Best, Jeff Windows Outreach Team

What is the Latest news of WINDOWS 7...? -

I HAVE HEARD ABOUT IT,,,WHAT IS IT ,IS IT RELEASED ?WHATS NEW IN IT ?

Just another jumped up version of Vista, stick to XP, you will be far better off.

it is oficially the new windows.Microsoft said it will take 3 years after they launch vista for win 7 to be launched. That would mean 2009 but still they said it is not FIXED and everything depedns on product quality. Not very much is known. What we know is that the main color is blue and hopes to solve any pc performance problems brought by vista while showing improved visual effects. Many leaked versions were shown and a few previews by some magazines but it looks it is far from quot;close to be launchedquot; maybe in 5-7 months... also from the previews of the beta s looks like it s not a big deal...just a fancy a blue vista... but we can t know anything until the final version is released

So microsoft is working on windows 7, but what are the other 6 before it.? -

so microsoft is working on windows 7, but what are the other 6 before it. windows 3.1 I would guess is 3. win 95 would be 4 win 98 would be 5 win 2000/me would be 6 win XP would be 7 win vista would be 8 then they should be on 9 . . . or is there something i m missing?

Yeah Windows 3.1 is actually the first one. I made this mistake too but that s how it is. I know it sounds like a weird name to give the first Windows to be quot;3.1quot; but yeah, then Windows 95 is #2 and so on.

VISTA was 6. XP was 5. NT was 4. 3.1 was 3. 2.0 was 2. 1.0 was 1. You get info on this here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcsAoLsU3... It was talk about Windows 7 and Minwin but also the codenames of Windows.

windows 3.1 is actuly number 1. that would mean win 95 is 2 and so on...

How do I connect to the internet in windows 7 beta build? -

I have downloaded windows 7 beta build. I installed it on another computer. I have installedmy belkin wireless adapter and when i click on choose network and click on a network and type in the networks security key, a analogues box pops up saying windows could not connect to the network. How do I overcome this?

Make sure your wireless adapter is working properly by going to device manager under control panel. Most likely the driver is not installed. Install the driver and you re good to go

Good Evening- My name is Jeff and I work with the Windows Outreach Team. Have you taken a look at Microsoft s TechNet site? It offers an in-depth forum for technical question and answer threads. You will likely get more help posting this question there. Be sure to include as many specifications as you can, especially about your wireless adapter. Good Luck, Jeff Windows Outreach Team http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Foru...

Windows 7 VS Windows Vista? -

What are the new specs of Windows Seven? When is the official release of Windows 7 in the market?

A test PC for the Windows 7 Beta that meets these minimum hardware recommendations (specific to the Beta and subject to change in the final version of Windows 7). Please do not use a PC you rely on for your work or daily use: - 1 GHz 32-bit or 64-bit processor - 1 GB of system memory - 16 GB of available disk space - Support for DirectX 9 graphics with 128 MB memory (in order to enable Aero theme) - DVD-R/W Drive - Internet access (to download the Beta and get updates) There is no official release for the final yet. The RC is supposed to come out in April which will be a newer build of Windows 7 and improved fixes. In my opinion, the final will be out sometime in Fall - Christmas this year. Check out the links in the sources if you plan on installing Windows 7. One of the main things to remember is this: Do download the Release Notes. Release Notes provide important information that you should know before installing and using Windows 7. You should familiarize yourself with all of the known issues in this document prior to installing the software. For example, the Release Notes describe a bug in which MP3 files may become corrupted and provide information on mitigating risk. This is how i would install Windows 7: - Backup important files - Download the Windows 7 ISO - Burn the ISO to a DVD - Install Windows 7 - Install all the latest updates, make sure that in the list of updates, that the KB961367 update is in the list. If it is, that s good, if not, you can get the information and the download here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/961367 - Restart if necessary - Transfer all your files onto your computer - Enjoy!

Under the hood Windows 7 is just Vista its whats they did with it that s the technological evolution I would assume it has the same specs as Vista does if you can run Vista you most probably can run Windows 7. Me personally I plan on waiting until its release beta software is not worth running especially if its an Operating system!!

Windows 7 is a much faster and more efficient OS than Windows Vista on every level from user interface to memory consumption.

minimum for beta testing Processor: 1 GHz 32-bit or 64-bit processor Memory: 1 GB of system memory Hard drive: 16 GB of available disk space Video card: Support for DirectX 9 graphics with 128MB memory (in order to enable Aero theme) Drive: DVD-R/W drive will be released late 2009

Windows 7 beta upgrade better then vista? -

do u recommend me installing the new windows 7 beta from vista? is it worth it?

DO NOT overwrite Vista as you will not be able to roll back. Windows 7 is awesome and I have been using it since Build 6801 thru 6956 and now 7000 Beta 1 which I am working with at the moment. I know its tempting but I suggest installing it on a spare Hard Drive if you have one lying around. As long as the Drive is no less than 40gb then you will be able to enjoy Windows like it has never been before. There is also the option to Dual Boot with Vista http://windowsaddict.blogspot.com/2009/0... Also bear in mind Windows 7 Beta 1 comes with an initial 30day trial period, however you can rearm to extend the trial period http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/11/06... However if you download Windows 7 from the official source an activation key will be issued with your download which will take you through to August 1st. 2009 http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows... LUG.

Hi, The Beta versions of Windows - 7 does appear to run slightly more efficiently thatn Vista so you may notice an improvement in response time for software. The BETA file though expires in August 2009 and is not completely functional; for example the mode which allows you to use a touch screen monitor is not enabled in the BETA version. The skins also are not complete so there is nothing too spectacular to view on screen. It is worth trialing though to see if it works ok on your computer. It does appear to have the necessary drivers to support a lot of hardware that initially Vista did not support. If you install it you can also set it to run in Vista Compatability Mode for anything such as printers etcetera that may not work yet in the Beta format. I d suggest installing it on a separate hard drive, but if you only have one then partition that so you still have Vista handy if things do not work well for you. So long as you are trialling Windows - 7 you might also want to try Microsoft s latest Beta of their Internet Browser. Regards, TgTips

yes yes yes yes yes. i have vista. thought it was great. few ugs and problems. and needs bery good system requirements. but windows 7 is very reliable. i am now running the beta of windows 7. works fine. its quicker. seems reliable. should be way more efficiant and so when it comes out. i suggest everyone gets it. it will be the best windows microsoft has ever made. hope this helps.

Preliminary reports indicate that it is an improvement over Vista. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately from what I ve heard) I don t have Vista so I can t download the beta version without reformatting my hard drive (I have XP) and I m not about to do that.

definitely. the Target of windows 7 is to work out all the kinks of vista and make it do what vista failed to do.......work fast, properly, easy, and just be overall better.

No. Beta = not ready and no support for drivers Just wait..

It certainly couldn t be much worse.

Does anyone know where i can download the new Windows 7 Officially ? !? -

Trying to use/install sierra wireless card on windows 7? -

When installing the drivers for my sierra wireless card (595U) it says quot;operating system not supportedquot;, I tried running the .exe file in windows XP compatibility mode because this card worked on XP but still no luck, please help!

Does it not start the add new hardware wizard? Go into device manager and right click on your device and click update driver. Find the exe file in windows explorer. Maybe that will work. If Vista supports it, 7 should.

even with the emulator the software its only good to test programs, it might be a better Choice to switch back to XP, or try to down load the Vista drivers and run it with the emulator, it much closer to Windows 7

Sorry to tell you that window s 7 Beta is not a done version. The beta means EXPERIMENTAL software. Also means you are beta texter and there is no support for it. and There is no software for it.

Windows 7 wireless connectivity issue? -

hi guys i have installed the windows 7 beta on my acer aspire 3680 laptop and for some reason it refuses to allow me to wirelessly connect to the internet the atheros wireless lan driver is working ok in device manager however when in the taskbar it reports there are no connections avalible as a pc enthusiast i have a pretty decent knowledge of both wired and wireless networks however this has stumped me i have informed microsoft using the quot;report feedbackquot; link found on every window, however i am wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar problem when running the beta i have connected the laptop via a network cable and this is fine any ideas guys !

I hope you know what quot;Betaquot; means... It is full of bugs and security riskes however that could be a bug. Try this: uninstall your driver and software for it and reinstall again if it doesn t work then windows 7 beta won t support that type of software and driver. Might your wireless is damaged or wireless is not supported in windows 7 beta.

because it is a beta version they might not have gotten the bugs worked out of the wireless yet. you do understand that beta versions are buggy and incomplete. you have done what you need to do in reporting it to microsoft since it is beta the will probably have it working ok on the public release. till then just use it wired.

hi brian all i know is quot;betaquot; in computer terms mean the program is still in the Development stage and not yet fully operational it does tell you in pc magazines to avoid beta programs problems do occur and it sounds to me like you ve come across one

goto device manager and uninstall wireless lan, then restart your laptop and let windows reload the drivers....also check for windows update because the network adapters are delivered are delivered by windows update

What is better and faster, windows xp or the soon coming windows 7? -

It would be nice as well to clarify why and where you got your facts. Thank you.

I can personally say that it depends on your machine: if it s quite powerful you should go with Windows 7 (when the SP1 for it comes out) because there will be more tech support, drivers etc. for it, AND it is a bit faster than Vista, as tests confirmed. If it s a bit old stick with XP, since all the new features might be quite a load on your computer. XP is faster since it does not waste your RAM and CPU with loads of features which you are probably not going to use anyways, like Windows 7 does. But, if you need some SOURCES, here are some articles: This one is for overall performance: http://forums.techarena.in/reviews/11051... This one is for performance in games: http://kotaku.com/5139009/so-which-is-fa... --- By the way, if you want performance, and very low prices (most things are free, actually), then you can get a Linux distribution. However, if you plan to play games, you should stick with a Windows OS. Another reason to stick with Windows is if you bought a lot of expensive programs for it. But that s just my opinion.

My laptop came with Windows XP Media Center Edition, and I have installed Windows 7 beta on it. Mind you that my laptop is a gaming laptop and it is 3.5yrs old. I have used all versions of windows EXCEPT Vista, and I have to say that MS has done something good for once. It runs as fast, or faster than with XP on it (oh,win7 is also a media center edition). I ve had it on my laptop for 2wks now and the only problem was finding drivers for my Air Card, and Wi-Fi card. But all I needed was to find the Vista drivers for them and now I have everything running on Win7 as was on WinXP. This is the first version of Windows that I will probably go out and buy to put on my PC. Hope this helps.

Being a Linux user and semi-Windows hater, I ve actually been very surprised and impressed with the Windows 7 Beta. Its very streamlined and polished and feels almost ready for release (which it pretty much is, seeing as they re skipping B2 and going straight to RC). On newer and more powerful hardware, Windows 7 will probably be a winner. On anything else however, sticking with XP is probably the best option.

windows xp is the fastest on quad cores and dual cores. stats say it is faster than vista and will be faster that windows seven. of course it will be faster on single cores as well. stick with it until you get the core i7, which will repotedly run windows 7 much faster. sorry no links, but it comes from my subscription to pcworld.

windows 7 is released for testing as beta. Microsoft said that: it s faster, reliable and easier than older versions of windows. To learn about windows 7, visit- http://www.whatamiracle.com/windows-7/ Yes, you can download it from here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows...

well if 7 is anything like vista, then be afraid... be very afraid. the Q is, do you want functionality, or flashy... and lets be honest, vista OS is flash and memory hungry... which is why its so slow. ive just upgraded to a 8450 with 4 gigs of ram, and a gig graphics card...and i run XP. its fast, stable and i never get the BSOD... mind you, i work on my PC, i dont play games or do social networking... my brother has a vista pc at work, my comparison is between his 3ghz twin chip, 1gig ram on vista, and my old 2.8 single chip, 1.5mb ram, on XP.

lol idk microsoft claims its faster than xp yea mabe after they f up xp with some slow down updates like sp3 which slowed it and didnt do much else why does the updates slow the pc its just a money money money money so idk xp was the awesome os why do ya need to f it up my xp never screwed up my vista always does

Windows 7 will probably be more of a resource hog than Vista was over XP. And no version of windows is stable right out of the box. If you need to get a copy of windows now then just get XP.

Windows 7 is out, it is in open beta. And it is not faster than XP, but it does have some nicer features. it uses quite a bit more resources than XP. For info and benchmarks... http://www.infoworld.com/article/08/11/1... To download the Windows 7 beta... http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows...

I ve heard 7 has faster load times and is faster than vista/xp/mac osx in running apps and so forth.

the soon coming windows 7?

And since Windows 7 isn t out, how would we know?

neither. apple is the besttt

Does Windows 7 Include Ultimate Extras? -

Does the Windows 7 Beta include the extras from Vista Ultimate? (e.g: Sidebar, DreamScenes, etc) And also, will Vista drivers work? (I assume so)

The is no longer a sidebar, instead you can have standalone gadgets. DreamScenes are not include as yet but there is a workaround http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthr... Most Vista drivers work. Make sure you create a seperate partition for Windows 7 as you must remember its only a Beta and it expires in August. Download Windows 7 Beta 1 http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows... LUG.

How to Install Windows 7 Beta on iMac running OS X 10.4.11. ? -

So I see Windows Beta 7 is a free download, and I ve wanted to try out boot camp and running a dual OS (windows and mac) on my iMac. My OS X version is 10.4.11. Is this a stupid idea? I love my mac and it has never crashed or had a problem. but if something goes wrong in the instillation and renders my Mac OS X useless.. I ll have not idea how to fix it! is this a dumb move, or is it rather easy for a intelligent computer literate person to do? I d like to try it out. And tips, suggestions, or instructions would be helpfull.

I wouldn t do it. Betas are notoriously unstable, and you have an unconventional setup there. You might try checking various Apple boards to see if anyone has actually tried it with your hardware/software combo.

Whats the difference between Windows Xp Home and Professional? -

All i use my computer for is browsing, word processing and watching dvd s/tv. I am downgrading from Vista home basic and don t try to talk me out of it...windows 7 even if it comes out by christmas thats to long, and Home basic runs poorly on my computer despite 2 GB of ram

Mainly user networking and configuration option. If you re not planning on using it on a network and mananging users, home is the same OS. Goto: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/win...

First make sure you can get all the drivers for your hardware in XP version. If you can t, you won t be able to use the hardware you can t get the driver for. The main difference is that Pro can connect to a domain controller (an office network) - the Home version can only connect to a home network.

The difference is primarily the ability to join a domain. Here s a good link to read more: http://windowsitpro.com/article/articlei...

XP Pro has more options: mainly for networking.

well that s very good, you would only need xp home to do what you are doing now, XP Pro, has the computer remote access building in, while XP Home you have to down load it . XP pro come with alot of build in networking uses. but only if you are using it on a network. XP home can be use to create a local area network for home use,

The spelling... honestly i don t get the difference

After installing Windows Explorer 7, I lost copy and paste? -

Lost paste and copy after installing Windows Explorer 7

Download this useful IE7 tweak which will give you the menu back on top again http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/ie7-men... You will then get the Edit back on top again where you can copy/paste again.

Use the keyboard shortcuts for the moment.. highlight text you want to copy.. then `ctrl+c to paste the same `ctrl+v and best to install a decent and stable browser like Firefox

man, you are the zillionth person to complain about windows explorer 7.. I guess I wont install it for a bit till I see what happens to a few more folks

this question should not be in quot;hardwarequot;!!!

How to uninstall windows 7 off vista? -

how do i un instal windows 7 off of my vista comp?

Delete the partition.

There is not really a way to uninstall Windows 7. The procedure to remove Windows 7 depends on the computer system at hand. Was Windows 7 installed as another operating system in a multi-boot environment? The easiest solution to uninstall Windows 7 would be to simply erase the data on the partition and join that partition again with another one. Or is it now the only operating system? Then you have to reformat your hard drive and install the Vista operating system again.

Windows 7 - Windows Installer crashes upon start up!? -

Any applications based on Windows Installer (For example: Steam) crash upon load. I have tried compatibility modes, rebooting, everything - to no avail. I have done some googling and found it may be related to a Registry cleaner (Namingly CCleaner) may have removed the necessary files to operate Windows Installer. So my question is: How do I fix this? Does anyone have a fix for this?

ey, look at this link http://www.neowin.net/news/main/09/01/19... i did that of rename a file at the registry and it works. Now i can open Windows Update and Install programs based on Windows Installer.

hi xevon, what your problem is that when you set up a windows that has you already streamed to what you are running like music or windows although it does not show it but to fix what has went wrong with your computer in your search hit startgt;programsgt;accessoriesgt;system tools scrol down to system restore there you will see a calender hit the first lit number to your left then your system will begin to restore then reboot. this has backed up your system hopefully before you searched and corrupted your computer setup if it hasn t then reboot when you see your windows logo start tapping f8 this will bring you to a safe mode screen scrol down to last good configuration when my system acted correctly (advance) this should have fixed your system. good luck hope i was helpful to you

It s basically to do with the Customer Experience Improvement Program. When that is enabled, it causes msiexec to crash. Alternatively it can be done in the registry like a user mentioned below. I used the registry option and it worked for me.

Windows 7 is not yet at release and possibly you are using Beta ,thus its obvious that u may face lot problems.Latest !=Better(always)

start regedit navigate to (HKLM\Software\ Microsoft\SQMClient\ Windows\DisabledSessions) rename MachineThrottling to _MachineThrottling

I ve got your very same problem, also windows update is not working (it finds updates but fails to install them)

Fabrizio s Registry answer did the trick for me.

Microsoft to release quot;Windows 7quot; ealier than expected in 2009 to supersede Vista..security improved? -

Microsoft has brought forward the release of it s new operating system, Windows 7, which will supersede Vista much earlier than anticipated..is this because of security issues with Vista?

Vista has had a bad image, mainly from slowness and lack of new functionality other than looks from XP. Very small percentages of people or businesses have upgraded to Vista and just stayed with XP. Most Vista purchases were related to new PCs. 7 will be their chance to redeem themselves.

Lets hope the other issues are sorted as well. Thanks for the information

What is going to happen to windows vista when windows 7 is launched? -

I believe there will be a slump in sales of windows vista both due to windows 7 being more modern and vista being totally $hit. what do you think?

I agree. Vista=Total Suckass shyt. So most probably Windows 7 should be much better and everyone would want that otherwise...Microsoft is going to have trouble.

I think they going to cancel that brand of hair gel you re using. :-)

they will have worked out all the bugs in it and than have them on the new windows 7

Is there a windows 7 compatible firewall? -

They keep saying in 2009 or 2010. Hope they get Vista stabilized completely by then.

hopefully never.. :))

How can you turn off the automatic caps lock from the type tool in Photoshop 7.0 for Windows? -

In the quot;characterquot; palette (Windows gt; Character) depress the buttons that either have quot;TTquot; or quot;TTquot; (the second T is capital but in smaller font). Alternatively, click on the right arrow near the top of quot;characterquot; palette and click the last option -- quot;Reset characterquot;.

Watch it s not the font you ve chosen causing this problem. Some fonts are supplied as upper case only (useful for titles etc), so the state of the Caps Lock (or Shift Lock, for that matter) won t make any difference to their output. You might be lucky and find that the compiler of the font has included small caps in the font, but I ve found this a rare event. More likely is that the font itself doesn t have lower case letters. Good Luck Scots

Can someone tell me what is Windows 7? Im running vista now if i install it what will hapen? -

Windows 7 is nothing ... yet. Windows 7 will be, when released, the next version of Windows OS. So, if you install it on top of Vista ... it will replace Vista. However, currently only beta releases are available for tech guys to test. Such releases are not suitable for end-users so stay away from them. I mean it.

If you install it over Vista, you will lose Vista (unless you have recovery disks or make a backup image). If you have to ask how to create a backup, how to use a recovery disk, how to remove Windows 7, etc., then you should not install Windows 7. Windows 7 is only a beta. There are too many people installing it over their current OS and are stuck now because they didn t think of creating a backup or making sure that they have recovery disks. Windows 7 beta will expire in August, so be prepared to have another OS ready to install by then.

Yes, you can install Windows 7, but it s still in beta, so you don t have the full performance of Windows 7. Just stick with Vista for the meantime.

windows 7 is microsofts next os if you install it over vista you will have a beta installed as your main os that still has bugs and will expire on august 1st if your not a beta tester or no nothing about computers dont download it

Word of warning dont I did, and ir screwed up my laptop.

Cant access internet explorer on windows 7? -

I just upgraded my vista to Windows 7 and am unable to open Internet Explorer. Please help me. :)

Hello XivTv- My name is Jeff and I work with the Windows Outreach Team. There are a number of possible reasons why you are unable to connect to the internet through IE. Because there are so many reasons, I do not have a definite answer to your problem, but I found a thread on Microsoft’s TechNet Forum for Windows 7 where this issue is discussed and several possible solutions are given. I hope you find one that works for you. Good luck and thanks for being a Beta tester. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Foru... Jeff Windows Outreach Team

Is the windows 7, 7000 build, the same exact one as the one microsoft plans to publically release? -

.

There have been quite a lot of builds of Windows 7 around... I doubt it will be the one that publicly release... they re not even up to Release Candidates (RC). If the one on that site is labelled build 7000, then yes.. otherwise no.

Of coarse not! Microsoft is not done with windows 7 yet, so there is no way to tell which build will be the final build. They improve on each build, and don t release it until they have everything (relatively) perfect, so no, it definitely is not. Also, the beta is never the final release, ever.

It might be since microsoft is going to release a public beta within the next week Here is some more info... http://wincert.net/news/1100-public-beta...

I am almost certain it will be Build 7000. Incidentally you should not be posting torrent links. LUG.

Anyone else trying the Windows 7 beta? -

Well, I downloaded the beta this afternoon, and did a fresh install off of Vista. My graphics card (Intel (R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller) wasn t installed automatically, so I had to do it myself. I don t know if this is a glitch with the beta or what, but after the graphics card install, and the restart, my drivers for the card disappeared, and my card was listed under Other Devices in the Device Manager. I tried re-installing drivers again, same result. Other than that, I like the beta of Windows 7. It starts and shuts down faster than Vista, the new Taskbar RULES, plus the new beta of Windows Media Player 12 is really cool (but i can t find the graphic equalizer, that is what bugs me). Anyone else had problems after installing the beta?

I m posting from Windows 7 on my laptop which I installed last night... same problem as you with the Intel 852/855GM graphics. Damn shame - everything else seems to be working great, but having to work in 640x480 resolution is a dealbreaker. Spent a few hours on this trying many tricks I ve found on the web to make the XP drivers work, but no good. Can t fathom why they wouldn t support the 852/855 considering so many laptops (which can otherwise run Win7 fine but can t have their graphics card updated) use it... how difficult could it be?! Hopefully this changes before the final Win7 version comes out or I won t be a happy camper and neither will a lot of others. EDIT: just a few hours after writing this, I got it to work. For some reason it wouldn t work with the latest drivers direct from Intel, but when I installed the ones from Dell (my laptop is a Latitude 100L) it finally worked. Had to right-click the Dell executable and set it to run in XP SP2 compatibility mode, though. If any of this applies to you, you might have to do bcdedit.exe /set TESTSIGNING ON and/or bcdedit /set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS to make sure the drivers stick... been working like a charm for me. HTH

What are some free AntiVirus for Windows 7? -

Is there a free AntiVirus for Windows 7?

Malwarebytes Antimalware and Avira Antivir.

As wiztek said, many software runs on vista works for Vista 7. But several did not. Symantec Endpoint Protection won t install correctly. SUPERAntiSpyware crushed the system. But a lot did work. I wouldn t try any registry cleaner just yet. Report Abuse

Windows 7 works great, at least better than Vista. FIXTA! I like the new taskbar a lot. UAC is less intrusive. Speed also improved. Keep it up Microsoft! Report Abuse

These run on my XP box. They should run on Vista, and Windows 7 they might run: Windows 7 is in Beta as of today 1-10-2009 Anti-virus: Avira Antiver: http://www.free-av.de/en/index.html Maximum PC gave Avira an 8 out of 10 rating which is the top rating for Free Anti-virus. Based on this rating I downloaded and have been running it, it is good so far. http://www.maximumpc.com/article/feature... Adware removers: A-squared Free: http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free... Spybot Search and Destory: http://www.safer-networking.org/

It s a beta, they re still working on new antivirus versions for it. Here s the link to the Microsoft page listing security software for Win7: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/antivir... Notice they have nothing listed? Win 7 won t be released into the real world for quite a while yet. Right now no one has anything to sell for it, let alone give it away.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 8.0 Technical Preview for Windows It s only a 90 day freebie but until the other AV companies come up with something this will work.

If there are no specific Anti-Virus for Windows 7 i would think that anything that works on Vista should work on 7 That s why they call 7 FIXTA

Windows 7 download page not available? -

Anyone else trying to download windows 7 and getting this Service Unavailable HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable. what does it mean?

The website crashed. Too many people are trying to get on it at once (me included) I suggest back off and stop trying until Noon. They are releasing it at 12 noon, so even if you get to it it won t do you much good. I m trying to get the beta too, its going to rock!

What are the minimun requirements for Microsoft Windows 7 ? -

Well the builds currently run at the minimum requirements that Vista uses, I m sure they d recommend a later/better processor and video card just to keep with the times though xD.

LOS ANGELES--In a technical session on Thursday afternoon, Microsoft provided the clearest public indication that it is planning on getting Windows 7 completed in time to run on PCs that ship for next year s holiday buying season. Same system requirements for running Windows Vista.

If your computer can run Vista, it can already run Windows 7. Official specs have not been announced but at a WinHEC demo, it ran on a netbook with 1GB ram and on an atom CPU , very smoothly

It s supposed to run on the same hardware as Windows Vista. I cannot find any information about specific hardware requirements. Beta 1 will be released in January 2009.

Windows 7 isn t out yet so how would we know?

Does Windows 7 Support? -

Ge Force 5500 FX? I ve been having a problem with my Integrated Graphics for Windows 7.W7 does not work well with XDDM. so I decided to canvas for good AGP 8x Cards capable of the job of having WDDM. Does the Geforce 5500 fit the bill? Current configuration: Windows 7 Build 7000, 512 MB DDR RAM, Pentium 4 2.26 GHz

Did you froget Windows 7 is a beta, ie, test OS? beign tested by millions (hopefully) of users and it is still unstabe and does ot support a lot as of now?

Minimum recommended specs call for:windows 7 beta 1 GHz 32-bit or 64-bit processor 1 GB of system memory 16 GB of available disk space Support for DirectX 9 graphics with 128 MB memory (to enable the Aero theme) DVD-R/W Drive windows 7 is like vista but faster and less problems than xp a card that will Support DirectX 9 graphics with 128 MB memory

It s not much better than what you have. When Windows 7 is ready and released i m sure you will want something much better than what you have. I m evaluating Windows 7 and it needs a lot of work yet.

Your best bet would to just install an earlier Windows than Windows 7 beta. Because it is a beta, meant for testing. So just wait for Windows 7 to officially come out.

windows 7 is still in BETA which could be the whole problem!!

If I want to try Windows 7, will all my applications that run on Vista run on Windows 7? -

Windows 7 is a beta - that means that you DON T install it on a computer that has files on it that you want to keep. (The usual fix for a 7 bug is quot;reinstall Windows 7 with a full formatquot;.) It was released so that people who know what they re doing can install it to a completely separate computer (it s a beta, so it could conceivably eat partitions) and report bugs back to Microsoft. It s *NOT* meant to be used so that you get the latest OS before everyone else does. If you install it and lose everything (and it could even damage your hardware), don t say that you weren t warned. (There are MANY known bugs, and probably at least hundreds of unknown ones. Just look at what the first flight of XP SP3 did.)

remember win 7 is beta expect problems yes it will gt;read instructions first and i placed windows 7 on a new partition if you also want to do the same go to help and support and type in partition and it will give you step by step instructions http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windo...

The two os are the same save for the looks, you can run almost all of them

Yes..99.9% will run correctly

Only problem I have had is .iso mounting programs, everything else works great.

Yes, most likely

In Internet Explorer; Why when i go to download Windows 7..It freezes with it goes to save. How do i fix it? -

Microsoft is getting hammered with download attempts. Wait a couple of days until things settle down. /

The server is very busy. You can get the official Windows 7 Beta (released by microsoft) from a third party site http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4637000/... As this is Beta software the use of a torrent is LEGAL before I start getting lectured. LUG.

Can I install the Windows 7 beta onto my computer via a USB flash drive? -

I m currently downloading the Windows 7 beta. The only problem is I don t have a DVD drive, so I can t burn the .iso file to a DVD or install from a DVD. So I was wondering if it s possible to quot;burnquot; the file to a USB flash drive and install from there? How would I go about doing this? I don t think I can boot from USB in my BIOS, so I would need to make a floppy boot disk, right? Alternatively, I can borrow my friend s external USB DVD drive. Would it be better to install from there? And how would I do that? Thanks.

Same too. You will need to burn it in a DVD because it s a boot file at. And the windows 7 beta is 2.44GB and it will not fit on 1.44MB Floppy. There is nothing you can do unless you get a DVD RW. Sorry about that Edit You can set the boot setting to your computers USB ports in BIOS, but you can t use quot;ISOBuster or Active ISO Burnerquot; to make a USB windows file on your USB. Its made for burning DVDs or CDs.

This is what I do to install the windows 7 beta. It will also work on Vista as well. http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-instal... Goodluck

There will be Windows 7 (Vistas succesor). Itll be released after Sims3. Can I play Sims3 on Windows 7? -

Sims 3 would be released: February, 2009. Windows 7 would be released in June 2009 or AFTER June 2009.

Yes you will be able to. On another note, I say Windows 7 is Vista SP2 under disguise, since Vista has gotten such a bad rep their just changing the name xD

Can I run Windows 7 64-bit with 2gb of ram and an 8gb Readyboost? -

I know 4gb is the new minimum for RAM, but I don t have 2x2gb sticks on me at the moment. Will I see similar benefits through Ready Boost 7?

quot;According to Jim Allchin, for future releases of Windows, ReadyBoost will be able to use spare RAM on other networked Windows Vista PCsquot; (From Wikipedia.org) Windows 7 I d imagine would have this feature. Windows Vista PCs saw a significant boost in processing operations and ect, your best bet would be to give it a try and see whether or not it ll run halfway decent on your rig and to see if Readyboost will actually make a significant difference. Read the wikipedia article more though because they did a lot of tests in Vista with readyboost, all of which saw increases in operation times.

Ive got Windows XP with IE 7.When I open pages more then 20 it doesnt work. How I can fix it? ? -

Surf multiple pages simultaneously.

Twenty pages at the same time!? My goodness, how can you possibly look at twenty different sites at once, or need to? Your system likely does not have adequate resources, RAM, or a high enough internet bandwidth to support such a large number of web pages at once (especially if even just a couple of them have active scripting). Unless you re prepared to upgrade to a PC that can handle 6+gb RAM and get yourself a dedicated line for internet connection, you re just going to have to open less pages at once.

Why is windows explorer 7 being sent to me as a critical update? -

I haven t downloaded it because of what I have read here about possible problems, but why is it listed as a critical update? What is a Beta version and how do I know which Beta version of MS Explorer 7 they are asking me to download?

As far as I understand, once IE 7 is put on the critical update list, it is no longer Beta. This is the real thing. Based on what I have seen, however, you can still choose not to install. However, It will remain in the critical update list . If in the end, you do install and then decide that you do not want it, Microsoft says you can uninstall through the add/remove program list in the control panel and your browser will automatically be restored to IE 6. Here is the FAQ section from the IE7 Home page in case you have any further questions. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/supp... By the way, I did install it and am very happy with it. No problems so far.

Because it is a critical update. However, it is not in beta form, it has been final for about 1 to 2 months now. If you are weary of installing it, make a restore point, install it, check it out, and if need be restore back.

dont know but had it and uninstalled it...have heard of other problems

Microsoft will not ask you to download the beta version. They just completed the beta version so it s just IE7 now. Windows automatic updates will ask you if you want to install it... It s more secure than IE6 so I recommend to install it even if you don t use it. (Beta is that the program is ready but has some bugs.) PS. http://getfirefox.com

I didn t want to download IE-7 either, because of what I was reading about it. But I eventually did, and glad that I am using it now. It has a lot more security features, than IE-6 did, and it is really easy to use, once you get used to it. Beta means, testing, but it is not in beta anymore, it is a regular program with all the testing finished..Here is the link to download IE-7 from, good luckgt;gt; http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/defa...

Windows 7 beta problem or Hardware problem with my comp? -

I just recently bought a brand new computer build. I didnt have an OS so i used windows 7 beta as an OS and it works great, but after i installed it it worked perfectly. The next day when i tried to boot it up, it takes several tries to show up on my monitor. It seems to be working fine, but Im wondering why is it taking several tries? its like its starting up but not showing on my monitor. Could this be a vga issue?

bad installation i think , i had this once , but now i have not , its just i think for your motherboard battery or your OS

could be having a problem with the video driver the cost of using betas is to report any problems so they can be fixed before it is released to the public

Windows 7 is it a new OS? -

Ugh already? Its probably not going to be compatible with my games, switching to vista was risky but i was lucky. Oh btw im going to buy a new dell computer (xps 420) will it have windows 7 if its a new OS? When is windows 7 going to come out?

You might be ok with your current PC Most likely at the end of this year or the beginning of next year at the ealiest. Mac Snow Leopard will be out this year. Vista has actually been out for 2 crappy years already but no one likes it. It was available from 30th Jan 2007.

yes it is no date when it will become available though.....

How can I save a HD movie trailer from the Apple website if I have Quicktime 7 pro? Im a Windows person!? -

Right click and save to desktop although I am not sure if you can do that with the movie trailers as they are copywrited. Doesn t make any difference if you are on Mac or PC - Quicktime plays on both. Not sure if HD movie trailers will play on Vista...?

Get the latest version of Real Player, it will download just about any video from the internet and you will be able to watch it, convert it for IPod/Zune, etc. Its free btw.

Why cant I connect to the network, using Windows 7 Beta? -

i am using a netgear wireless router, and netgear wg111v2 usb adapter. i have the software, that i used on vista, and everything works fine, with no problem. its just the new windows 7 beta, that has problems. can anyone help. you can email me on here, if you want

Don t forget that Windows 7 Beta is a test edition of the final retail or corporate product! You will almost certainly find bugs or problems, that s the nature of a beta. Netgear and/or Microsoft might provide updated drivers... but if you don t feed anything back to them, they may not ever know about it! I m downloading it to check it out myself...

Windows 7... rockin

Are all of the drivers installed properly on the 7 version? I bet they aren t.

Dose eny 1 know where to get a Microsoft windows 7 beta disk? -

i wanted to try it out

People say it s illegal but it isn t even copyrighted yet, once it is, simply buy Windows 7: It s still in Alpha/Pre-Beta. 64-Bit: http://dl.btjunkie.org/torrent/Microsoft... 32-Bit: http://dl.btjunkie.org/torrent/Microsoft... You ll need a torrent downloader, try uTorrent. You ll have to wait over-night for it to download, so keep your PC on over night, a desktop preferably (not a laptop).

You mean uTorrent? http://www.utorrent.com/ Report Abuse

no beta yet available first beta out Q1 2009 microsoft gave Alpha (pre beta) copy to oem (dell HP etc) companies to test it out

its available illegally, but legally it s not available yet so wait for some time before a safe windows 7 beta will be put on Microsoft website

Keep an eye on this site for it. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows... Cheers

Ever since i downloaded Windows Explorer 7, I have experienced frequent internet connection breaks. Plse help? -

Have to agree with all but the first poster (nothing new there!) - you really do not want to go back to IE6. Why? Internet Explorer is very much integrated into the Windows architecture - which means all the bugs inherent to IE6 are also carried forth into your OS. Think of IE7 as a system-wide security upgrade - even if you never it. Now first off, did you install IE7 from Microsoft or the Yahoo version that I keep hearing about - if it is the latter, get rid of it and install the original from the MS website. You ll also need to reinstall your messengers - this will restore their connections to Internet Explorer. As well as this, you may want to check your Java and Flash Player plugins are both up to date, as earlier versions of these can also cause problems. Hopefully this gets you back on track. Personally I am a Firefox user myself, but I still made sure I updated to IE7 on XP even during the beta stage (Vista already has it so no need to update there).

Yeah, same for me. The sign-in page of Yahoo never opens in my IE7.0. I use Firefox anyway and thats pretty much better than IE. You can get it from http://www.mozilla.com/ . But don t make it as your default browser; keep IE as your default browser and use Firefox for browsing.

hit on gt;startgt;control panelgt;add remove gt;check mark on da top of gt;add remove gt;show up dateslt;lt; then look for (IE7 ) hit on that then hit remove . (IE7) will uninstall and your system will re-run (IE6) no need to download (IE6) again

use Firfox 2.0.Better than IE 7

Uhm....well in that case dont use your IE7 but use Mozzilla..and this could happen if your internet cable is not properly hooked up to your computer.

The Windows Explorer 7 has higher security features, it might be your security settings are two high, an another option is a possible conflict with Firewall or Antivirus

Where do i get my windows 7 product key? -

www.seriall.com

Pssst. here where to go to get the product key.

Pssssst... To get a product key you need to have a Windows Live account. Go to http://technet.microsoft.com/ and log in using said Live account. Then PASTE (don t just click it) one of the following links into the same window you used to log in. If you re using a 32-bit computer: https://www.microsoft.com/betaexperience... If you re using a 64-bit computer: https://www.microsoft.com/betaexperience... (Note: It doesn t really matter which one you choose, as a 32-bit product key will work for a 64-bit computer and vice versa.) When you get to the product key page, be sure to print out the page for a personal record (a no-brainer, I m sure) and go over the installation instructions after you click the download link.

What programs do you think microsoft should buy the rights of for windows 7? -

i think they should get vlc media player, firefox, adobe photoshop.

I think that Microsoft should focus on creating a stable, secure operating system and not worry about buying new applications. Of the apps you mention - Firefox is open source it s frankly inconceivable that Microsoft would buy this and there s no way that Adobe is going to sell Microsoft Photoshop (it s their number 1 cash cow).

They don t need to. The software developers will do whatever they want. Microsoft just makes the OS that these programs run on. They are in no way associated with Mozilla, Adobe, or any other software company. Plus, Mozilla is open source anyway. Who would pay for it?

They need to make their OS work better before they buy up all these small companies. Everytime they add a program it runs in the background robbing your computer memory.

They might as well include Winzip in Windows 7. Because I guaranteed you that 99% of the Winzip licenses out there are from keygens.

I think Miscrosoft needs to keep their greedy hands out of things, they mess everything up....just look at Vista, they re already discontinuing it.

Size of hard drive for windows 7 beta? -

How is it that Windows 7 (Build 7000 BETA) has been so easily LEAKED ? -

This and previous Builds 6801 amp; 6956 were also LEAKED. Is it a Microsoft inside job as I cannot think of another way this could of happened. If so can it really be considered software piracy were one to download and use Windows 7 BETA prior to the official release in mid - january http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthr... LUG.

well the previous builds were given out to many many people at the windows pdc bout a month ago. they are bound to fund their way onto the internet and i imagine sort of the same thing has happenned with this on a smaller scale. as for piracy, its such a vague rule when it comes to software betas. i would say your fine but i dunno...

No, it s not a quot;grey areaquot;, it s quite clearly still software piracy. If you don t believe me, download a torrent and tell Microsoft about it, I m sure they ll help you learn the true answer. Beta software is still software, and it s still copyrighted, as soon as the first line of code is written. Report Abuse

Forget it, it s an obvious troll. Probably he was just looking for someone to tell him quot;it s ok to pirate itquot; so he can sleep better at night. Report Abuse

Many non-Microsoft developers have access to the pre-release Windows builds via the MSDN. This is so they can develop software for it, or ensure their current software is compatible with a future version. As to if it s considered software piracy...well DUH, of course it is. Just because it hasn t been released yet or even completed development, doesn t make it legal to steal it. Is it still theft if you steal a car that s still on the production line?

Have a look at this handy tweak to download which will put the menu back on top http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/ie7-men... or Go to Startgt;gt;Control Panelgt;gt; Add/Remove and uninstall IE7 which will then revert back to IE6.

How do I stop document hyperlinks from opening in the Internet Explorer 7 Window? -

I recently upgraded to IE 7. When I click a hyperlink that points to a documnet (specifically Excel), the document automatically opens in the internet explorer window. I would like it to prompt me for the Open or Save option like IE6, and for the open functions to open it in an excel window, not in the internet explorer window. Please note this is for clicking links on webpages. There is no option to quot;Open Withquot;.

Try right clicking the link and in the menu that opens choose quot;Save Target Asquot;. Then save the file to your hard drive in a folder you know or your desktop. Then go to that file and open it in the program you want. If your file association is already set for the program you want that file extention to open in, then just double left click it.

Windows 7 Problems with UsB Actiontec Adapter? -

I have just installed Windows 7 and I really like it. However, my internet is not working. I have got a rather old actiontec 802.11b usb wirless adapter and its not saying that its installed. And i try installing drivers but it aint working. Plz can you tell me how. Thanks, Charlie

Because the OS is very new a lot of devices won t work just yet, especially with older devices, the way to fix this is to try Vista and XP drivers, as they have had a lot success in the past. Failing that, even try ME or 2000 drivers.

Its a beta, not everything is gonna work. If there isn t an updated driver for it, there is nothing you can do at this point.

try using the XP drivers as opposed to Vista drivers, they seem to work.

Windows 7 Beta a Portable Hard Drive? -

I have a 230GB portable hard drive. It has all my media on it because i have very little space on my laptop. So my question is: Will installing Windows 7 on my portable hard drive cause me to lose the files on it?

Simple answer: Yes. Long answer: Not all BIOS systems can support booting from external drives. But you will lose everything on that drive if you install to it because Windows will format the drive before installing a new operating system. There are sometimes ways around this, but I m not sure if there are for Windows 7. Good luck.

I would backup anything important somewhere else just to be sure, and restore those files after you re done.
