GRUB or Grip? If your boot loader is GRUB (GRand Unified Bootloader), I can help. Windows 7 beta will overwrite whatever boot loader you have, including XP, replacing it with its own (perhaps buggy) code. But you can then reinstall your GRUB and add Windows 7 as a boot option. To do so, boot a Live Linux CD (such as the one you can burn from http://getpclinuxos.com/KDE/ ) and interrupt GRUB by pushing ,the lt;escgt; key before the default start-up happens. Then go to a GRUB prompt (quot;grub gt;quot;)and do this: grubgt; find /boot/grub/stage1 Output shows where your Linux grub menu is located, such as at (hd0,6). Mine gives quite a list since I run many distros on several hard drives. Then, continue with grubgt; root (hd0,6) grubgt; setup (hd0) and you re done. lt;ctrlgt;lt;altgt;lt;deletegt; to reboot, remove the CD, choose Linux, add Windows 7 to your GRUB menu (which still has your previous choices) using your Linux graphical boot configuration tools, or edit your /boot/grub/menu.lst as root. By the way, Windows 7 beta can be installed anywhere to any partition you want it on - including onto a USB stick (recommend one of 8 GB for the talented, and 16 GB for a full install) or an Apple Mac. Just Google for quot;installing Windows 7 betaquot;. I ll stick with Linux, thanks just the same ;) Good luck!
actually, Windows 7 will replace XP. they don t allow separate partition installing in Beta. but i bet they will on the final release for sure. but you are correct, your boot manager will get screwed. i actually just installed on a separate hard disk. it was so easy.
