Taken from my review of Windows 7 (Build 6801) http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthr... Comparing the two on the same machine with these specs. 2.4ghz Pentium 4 CPU 256mb GeForce 6200 Graphics 1gb PC2100 RAM To begin with unlike some I have never had a real problem with Vista, however I thought Microsoft would have come up with a more stable and compatible with hardware package before releasing it. OK so I have Vista Ultimate running on my PC its never been blisteringly fast probably due to only 1gb RAM (Microsofts recommendation) but at the same time not painfully slow so it is pleasant enough to work with. Also I have found with the release of Service Pack 1 performance has indeed improved somewhat. Out of pure curiosity I downloaded a torrent of Windows 7 Ultimate (Build 6801) so I could draw some sort of a comparison to Vista. The result was quite amazing. Windows 7 took just 15mins to install as opposed to 25mins for Vista if I remember correctly, things were looking good. Boot time is almost halved. Speed when up and running is crisp and snappy. This is also with more eye candy than Vista has ie. the new glass SuperBar and the UAC although still included is less obtrusive. So how have Microsoft managed this with Windows 7 but were unable to with Vista, it leaves me bewildered. The major downside is Internet Explorer 8 Beta which at present lags terribly. The first action I took was to install Firefox 3 and it performed at lightning speed. So it would seem Windows 7 has the performance of XP and the security of Vista together with a attractive Desktop. It looks as though if (Build 6801) is anything to go by it is going to be everything that Vista should have been. Nice one Microsoft its just been a long time coming. LUg.
I see how you think it looks the same, but Microsoft haven t got around to changing the themes yet, I mean anyway, can YOU think of a better theme to Aero, is there one? Here s some points: 1. A better kernel, a minimalistic form of Windows NT 6.0, called MinWin, with the version Windows NT 6.1. This improves the speed of Vista/7 s graphics and memory management, hence the less graphics and memory is less used by the kernel and there s lots left over for applications, etc. The new load/unloading runtime allows memory to be managed a lot better than what Vista actually did. If you ran an older Windows Operating System like XP on one machine, Vista on another, and 7 on another (all machines would need to be the same make, model and have all the same specifications for proof of comparison), then you would see that Vista running the Aero Basic theme, XP running the Luna theme, and 7 running the Aero theme, you d see that 7 would still be the fastest. 7 is what XP and Vista combined (Blackcomb) should have been. 7 is awesomely powerful. And if you shrank 7 with vLite/nLite you d get a very portable OS. I suppose a DVD+RAM disc could run like TinyVista (Tiny7) and be like a LiveCD at the same time. 2. The SuperBar, an intriguingly easy-to-use new task bar, that is icon based as well as icon-text based, the multi-window and intelligent grouping and widget-small-form features make it surprisingly easy to use, when I first installed it, I thought the SuperBar (build 6933) didn t look that at all gracious and user-friendly and I thought it meant more clicks, but it s easier, and it is way better in both interaction and design. 3. The new start menu, this is certainly something Vista should have had. It s a lot better, and the search results expand across the right menu, this gives you more room to read the label of the file you re looking for! 4. Minimalistic Ribbon UI (Fluent-User-Task-Oriented-Interface), this standard has certainly improved the usage of multi-task orientated programs, including those that are tab based, and those that just need an options ribbon, I do not believe that single-task or no-task orientated programs like games and Internet Explorer need this design, it is too complex for single-interfaces. It is good to use them in desktop publishing and office work, including the new Wordpad and Paint that features the UI (Paint needs transparency, why don t they give Paint transparency support!!!) 5. Full compatibility for both XP and Vista applications, and Vista drivers. 6. .NET Framework 4.0, featuring the latest technologies. 7. Direct3D 11, however the full DirectX 11 technologies are not released, Direct3D 11 was not included in the build I was given (6933). 8. Better ADO.NET, Sharepoint, Exchange, and many new technologies support. 9. A new client shell and API, this contains better, new GUI controls for both Win32, Win64 and .NET. 10. Releases on both 32-bit and 64-bit platforms. 11. A server edition will also be available with all the same technologies (Windows Server RC2). 12. No-side bar, yes the cumbersome side bar has gone, now you are forced to put/dock your gadgets anywhere on the screen (it s like a sidebar on all edges on the screen!) 14. Yes, they like to miss out Microsoft Office 13, not necessarily by Triskaidekaphobia, but by including Microsoft Office in Windows 7, who knows, it still is a rumour, no? However it will feature support to both Windows Mobile 6.1-8 and Microsoft Office 14, etc... 15. Better security, 7 comes with a UAC metric control, where you choose when UAC will display, if you set it very low, UAC will only display for downloaded, rogue name/unidentified executables. The higher the more secure. It s all good, but kernel development hogged the whole process of release. And by the way, did you know, that build number 7000 will probably be the next announced build up from the current one (6933), however they say they aren t going to release it until June the 30th 2009 earliest, so will it come earlier, or will the build number reach 8000, if it does reach so high a build number, Windows 7 should not be called Windows 7, but Windows 8, or something more reliable, they are paid enough to make names, for goodness sake! Ask this to yourself, do you like it? I know its early at the moment, but Windows 7 is supposed to be the marmite of all Operating Systems, either you like it or not! So, if you hate it, don t buy it, if you like, go ahead, buy it! Thanks. CybX.
Its of course better than Windows Vista !!! Go here for more Videos of Windows 7 http://tenuktutorials.blogspot.com/2008/...
If u install on virtual pc it sucks but if u install a fresh copy it great 50x beta than vista trust me but the damn activation is a pain in the ***
