YES, Direct3D 11 is in Alpha, they ll release it shortly with Windows Build 7000 Beta 1, or later. DirectX 11 should be ready for the final release of Windows 7 in June, 2009. They are not making DirectX 11 cards to the public just yet, because just Direct3D 11 is released, not the full library (DirectX 11) , but they will be within the next year. Windows 7 may be Windows Build 8000 by the time it is released, thus it might be Windows 8. Microsoft are aiming for some time in June, 2009 for Windows 7, hopefully DirectX 11 will be made ready for then. Direct3D 11 won t be far off Direct3D 10, just 3D models will have more polygons, better physics, water effects to surfaces (with physics of the particle emissions, splashes and such). Game worlds will be much larger in 3D and 2D, especially as the game card video memory volume specification gets larger. Direct3D will come with better GPGPU, multi-threading, anti-aliasing, multi-core, backwards-compatibility, forwards-compatibility, and tesselation support. Shader Model 5 will require a Direct3D 11 card, however Direct3D 11 software/games should run on versions 9-10.1 of Direct3D cards as well and later than 11.
Many of the Microsoft rumors turn out to be false, depending on the source. I could not image them making the next version of Windows without making a new DirectX. Gamers were not convinced that they should switch from XP to Vista until DirectX 10. A switch to a new version of Windows is usually a big performance hit; to compensate for that Microsoft has to offer something newish. You aren t going to find a concrete answer, only rumors. Keep in mind, though, that Microsoft denied that they were ditching Vista and making a new OS until they were unable to hide it any longer. From what I understand, Windows 7 will use a more unix like kernel, just as Linux and OSX do, and will be faster and more stable than Vista. Of course, that doesn t mean that Microsoft will make Windows completely unix like. It just means that more stability and a little more leanness will be added. If they did update DirectX, then you would need a new graphics card. If you already payed $300 for a good graphics then the prospect of buying another $300 graphics card will be unappealing to most.
They aren t Direct x 11 is a completely theoretical thing right now. Its coming out in a bit tho.
probly,
