Hi there! You have me a little confused: Do you already own a PC and your dad is going to upgrade the OS to Windows 7, or was he planning on buying a whole new computer? Because upgrading the OS would be infinitely cheaper than buying a new machine. If the plan was to buy a new machine, and the debate is whether or not to get a new PC or to buy a Mac, well, that s a tough question... I have a Mac at home (and love it), but have used PCs at work for years. When you get down to it, a computer is a computer, and both will get the job done. True, Macs can be unfortunately pretty pricey. (I have no idea what the cost of a new PC with Windows 7 would run.) But there are a few pros to owning a Mac: 1) Macs aren t susceptible to viruses like PCs are. And they have built in security, so there s no need for anti-virus software. 2) I ve also had fewer problems with my Mac quot;crashingquot; than the PCs I ve worked on. It s a VERY stable environment. I leave my computer on 24/7, and only reboot if I install new software, and only power it off if I m going out of town or if there s a lightening storm. And it quot;wakes upquot; from sleep mode almost instantly. 3) The new Macs are AMAZINGLY fast. I was always frustrated with my work PC running slow, even after they upgraded me to 2 GB of memory. 4) With Apple s Bootcamp, you can run Windows on your Mac. (And it runs BETTER than on a PC! LOL =) http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/boo... 5) Three words: Plug and play. I love the fact that my Mac hooks up to the TV, the projector, the camera, WiFi spots, and anything else so easily. No settings to change, no long configurations or quot;wizardsquot; to go through. Just plug it in, and it works. (One sample: I used my laptop for teaching for several years, and my students (college-level) were always amazed when I d just plug my computer into the classroom TV, and they could instantly see what I was doing on screen. Other teachers with PC laptops wouldn t even bother, because they either didn t know how to change their monitor settings to output to the TV, or they knew how, but it took too long to set it up!) 6) If you re planning on getting into digital arts (graphic design, web design, photography, etc) tell your dad getting a Mac is essential to your future career. (Although, this day and age, I think it s about 60/40 for graphic companies that use Macs vs. PCs -- the gap is much closer now than it was in the past. However, if you go to school for graphic design, you ll learn on a Mac.) While you may be ready to make the switch, many people who have only ever worked on PCs are afraid of Mac s OS, even though (I believe) it s more user-friendly than Windows. His main reason for sticking with a PC may be that he s comfortable with how PCs work, and doesn t want to change. So really encourage him by saying that Macs are easier to use and, while they may be a little more expensive, it s a better choice in the long run. Good luck!
Okay, do some research for him. Depending on his knowledge of technology, he might only use the reasons that people at work tell him. If you can prove to him that Macs are better (which they are), then maybe you will win the case. Include some obvious reasons that make Macs superior. Also, be aware that maybe he is not comfortable with macs, adapting to a Mac can be difficult, but help him understand the better qualities over Windows.
windows will probably cost less than a mac. he s right about the support with windows. most corporations stay windows, not mac. windows don t have entire control over what it can run on, while apple controls everything, so that explains the added price. also, how do you know mac is better than windows 7 if windows 7 isn t even out yet. edit to brando: what is the proof that macs are better? don t bother referencing the mac ads at all. edit: yeah, then it looks like your stuck with windows. oh well. its not better than osx, nor vice versa. its just different. if you have enough ambition, you can install osx on your pc, just with a bit of hard work. go google it. hackintosh
What is the usage of the computer? Home use or office? If it s for office use, it s better to use Windows, as it s good with 3rd party hardware support like printers and projectors. Well, if it s home use, you can always say Mac comes in one piece and needs less maintenance.
If yer dad s forking out the bucks, then yer dad s got the right to make the decision. I have two Windows boxes, one MacOSX, computer experience since 1969. I chose MacOSX. There s one: experience. 20% of laptops purchased for back-to-school this year were Macs, a new high. There s two: growing popularity. I always suspected, Macs are BOUND to be susceptible to viruses. They just HAVE to, no? I ve been trying and trying to find more info. ALL the experts, and even some websites who SHOULD have a financial interest in saying otherwise, say Macs aren t being chased by viruses these days. There s three: security. PC Magazine, Consumer Reports, Computer World, eopinions.com, other sources (and me) rate Apple far at the top of the heap (followed closely only by my ol pal IBM) in hardware durability. There s four: good machinery. In spite of what quot;theyquot; say, there s PLENTY of software available for MacOSX. There s five: go look, it s free. After 20 years on IBM mainframes and 10 years on Windows, I learned MacOSX in 2 weeks. There s six: it s easy. Good luck with pop.
you can t.. its simple. I m gonna wait for windows 7 as well. Btw Macs are more expensive than PCs and in terms of software compatibility, windows has it beat. I see guys with the new macbooks here running XP hah
